Hello Bodybuilder,
The topic today is regarding bad advice on heavy, low rep vs light, high rep training.
The initial arguement is this…. Your muscle is made of both fast and slow twitch muscle fiber. Slow twitch fiber responds best to high rep training and fast twitch muscle responds best to heavy training.
The bad advice comes one of two ways… Bad Advice Method #1. “Fast twitch fiber is what most larger muscle cell structures are made of, so to build large muscle you must train heavy and with low reps.”
Bad Advice Method #2. “Because you want to build as much muscle tissue as possible, you must do workouts that are a mix of both heavy with low reps and light with high reps in the same workout.”
Here is the truth….
The second of the two incorrect approaches above seems to be the lesser of two evils, as it seems to make sense by attempting to cover both fast and slow twitch fiber training styles. However, neither work that well because in the first method you will find your body stagnating fairly quickly, as you work on only one fiber type (fast twich fibers).
In the second method you can’t get a balanced benefit by trying to please two masters. In the process of incorporating low weight, high rep training, you will lose too much lift strength to get full advantage from your heavy, low rep training. In effect, all your training will wind up effecting your slow twitch fibers and not so much the fast twitch.
People advocating the second of the two wrong methods are often fairly lean and toned, but rarely carry a lot of mass.
The answer… is to do both heavy, low rep training and light, high rep training, but not in the same workout.
Ah Ha!… You are likely thinking I may be telling you to train with heavy weights for three months and then switch to light weights, much like they used to years ago by going through bulking and cutting seasons. Not so.
You should vary your style every two to three weeks max from high to low.
This will allow you to take full advantage of utilizating optimal fiber recruitment for each fiber type, without taxing it the wrong way. Now you have the best of both, without trying to serve to masters.
That’s the truth about building natural muscle for today.
